Grace Her Many Horses

Grace along with her three children, Moses, Wayne, Kira, and Alyce, her first granddaughter, have been living on the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation in Montana. She is the daughter of Lorna and the late Leo Her Many Horses, Sr., and she is an enrolled member of the Oglala Lakota Tribe. Her parents stressed the importance of education and Grace received her B.A. in Criminal Justice from Augustana College located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and a Masters Degree in Rural Sociology from the University of South Dakota located at Brookings, South Dakota. Grace served as the Supervisory Criminal Investigator for the Chippewa/Cree Tribal Law Enforcement program for several years but recently accepted the position of Chief of Police for the Rosebud Sioux Tribe in South Dakota.

Grace was encouraged to participate in the Ladies Fancy Shawl Dance by her parents and late grandmothers, Emily Her Many Horses and Grace Pourier. Traveling with brothers, Chico and Randy, Grace has been dancing in Ladies Fancy Shawl Category since the age of thirteen.

Grace has the great fortune to wear the beautiful handmade shawls of Nellie Menard and the unique beadwork of the Alice Fish, both from the Rosebud, South Dakota. Grace has been influenced by such Fancy Shawl Dancers as Gladys Jefferson of Crow Agency, Montana, Rita Metcalf of Rosebud, South Dakota and Mert Howard of Rapid City, South Dakota.

Grace had the honor to be dressed in Osage clothes by Tracy Moore, the daughter of late Thomasine Moore of Fairfax, Oklahoma. Grace has been adopted by Kenny and Patsy Gopher of Rocky Boy and was given the Cree name of “White Eagle Woman”. Grace also carries two Lakota names, “Sacred Cedar Woman” which was given to her by her Grandfather Dawson Has No Horse and “Woman Who Carries the Law” which was given to her by Sicangu Lakota elder, Christine Dunham.

Having competed at the Denver March Pow-wow for many years, Grace is honored this year to serve as the Head Northern Judge. She hopes everyone will have a safe and enjoyable time at the Denver March Powwow.
